OSI Group Purchases Tyson Food Plant in Chicago

At the end of 2015, Tyson announced that they would be closing their 200,000 sq. ft plant located in Chicago. The closure would result in laying off 480 workers, with 250 employees remaining until the last day of production October 1 2016. Tyson previously used the plant location to prepare meals, like tempura chicken, crepes, omelets, and meatballs, for the hospitality industry.

Tyson’s second plant, located at 3548 N. Kostner Ave, is still in operation. OSI Group purchased the plant, located in close proximity to their existing Chicago plant, for $7.4 million. No report on how many employees remain at the facility was given; however, a brief announcement provided by OSI Group states the new plant will provide infrastructure that will support continued business growth for the company. No further plans were detailed.

Baho Food Acquisition

Another large investment made by OSI Group, L.L.C, was the acquisition of Baho Food, a dutch manufacturer or deli meats, snacks and convenience food supplier for retail and service companies. Baho Foods is believed to be highly beneficial for the European segment of OSI as it provides a much broader presence of the company throughout Europe.

John Balvers, Baho Food’s managing director, and his team of managers plan to remain a part of the business and continue working with OSI to develop a strategy to grow the newly combined company.

OSI Group continues to develop, holding the title as one of the top 100 companies in America. OSI Group prides itself on having a company that focuses on self-sustainability. Numerous factories operated by OSI Group recover rainwater, recycle by products and recycle water. As each new plant is developed, less and less energy is used for operation, ensuring they do not waste resources on the community grid. OSI Group remains concerned with how their systems impact the environment, and opt to create healthier food in a sustainable system.
